Style with a gothic edge.

Today’s Style: Dandy Death

I have to be honest, I feel a little weird wearing the skull mask again so soon after the last post, but I wanted to do a death inspired style, and it fit too perfectly for it. I hope you will all forgive me! I also wanted to make my version of death a gentleman. So I started with a black suit and went from there. I added skull cufflinks, my skeleton in a top hat cameo and a few other touches (like bone crosses and the spine tie) to finish it off.

Today’s Style: Phantom of the Opera

I woke up this morning knowing two things - that I needed to wear my d20 socks because my D&D group was meeting today, and that I wanted to wear my pirate pirate lolita coat from Fan Plus Friend. I started putting together my outfit and added music note cufflinks, my ascot and my red shoes, and put my skull mask on for my Phantom of the Opera style.

When I work up this morning, I knew I wanted to wear pink, because it was Wednesday. But, I didn’t know what else I wanted to wear. Thinking about it, I wanted to do something Halloweeny. So I brought in elements of skeletons and skulls and went for it.

I was doing a little bit of retail therapy over the weekend, and I stopped in Belk. I wasn’t expecting to find much, but I spotted a red bow tie that had skull and crossbones on it. In a department store. I knew I had to have it. This morning, I was putting together an outfit for the bow tie, and stuck on the concept of bones. It’s obvious on one level, but it also reminded me of the Depeche Mode lyrics from “Stripped”, ”Stripped down to the bone”.

Lately, I’ve felt stripped bare. I cried in the middle of a movie theater. I feel like I’m wearing my emotions on my sleeve. And strangely, it’s felt good. I’ve always been scared of feeling vulnerable, and I’m still terrified of that. But I’m also trying to be a little more comfortable with it.

Awkward Dance party was one of my favorite pose ideas from my Nickmas celebration on Saturday night. Here are a few choice pictures of my with various guests.

This past Saturday, I had a Nickmas celebration. For those who don’t know me in person, I take my birthday very seriously, and have dubbed it Nickmas. There are Nickmas celebrations throughout the month of October, but the official date of Nickmas is this coming Saturday, October 13th.
And for the record, I was born on Friday the 13th. And yes, it does explain a lot.
The theme for this particular celebration was “Suit Up!”, and it was an invitation for my friends to dress their best. Whether that was in white tie like me, as a superhero or even, in the case of two of my friends, in track suits.
I also set up a small area to serve as a photo booth and put out props for people to play with. Then my friend Amy and I came up with poses for people to try and put them on scraps of paper. Guests could then pull a pose out of the hat and do their best impression.
I’ll post several of the photos from the party here over the next few days, but here’s one of my favorites. “When in doubt, pinkies out!”

What would an elegant zombie look like anyway? Obviously “dandy zombie” isn’t really a thing (and sadly I wasn’t feeling up to try to make myself look more ghoulish), but I liked the idea of it. And the theme for today is also one of my favorite lines from a song by the National called “Conversation 16”. I tried to bring all of these ideas together into an outfit, and use it all as an excuse to wear the new lace cuffs I bought recently. I hope you like it!
