In the 1500’s, Vicino Orsini commissioned the Sacro Bosco Parco dei Mostri, or “Park of the Monsters” as a memorial to his wife. But in addition to a mausoleum and other more traditional memorials, he also included a selection of monsters, orcs with open mouths, dragons fighting lions and more. I was captivated by the park and was so happy to have the opportunity to have a shoot here. The park is just north of Rome, outside the small town of Bormarzo and is definitely worth a visit. I actually did two sets here, this one focusing on the monsters and another one focusing on the memorials.

Most of my trip to Italy was a lot of fun. But the main purpose of the trip was to bury my father. He died a year ago, but he had wanted to go to Italy before he died. It’s where our family is from, but he was confined to a wheelchair and wasn’t able to travel much. So after he died, I came up with the idea of my brothers and I taking him to Italy. Doing in death for him what he couldn’t do in life. I’ve posted before about how complicated and conflicted my relationship with my father was, but I was glad I could do this for him. I hope he can rest now.
Who knew ashes could be so heavy?
