In the 90’s I was in love with the X-Men. I bought all of the X-Titles they put out and watched the cartoon every week. And my favorite character was Gambit. It might have had to do with the face that he’s from New Orleans, which is where I was born. Or it might be because he was so cool and I was painfully uncool. Or that he was a ladies man and I had absolutely no idea how to talk to women. I don’t know. But I was drawn to him.
So when leahstuff challenged me to do a theme based on him, I was glad to.
The only problem? I hate his costume. I think the colors had a lot to do with the limitations of color options in comics printing at the time, but really? A hot pink shirt and a brown trench coat? Gloves without some fingers but have others? Blue metal accents and boots? What is going on, Gambit? I thought you were supposed to be a master thief?
So I decided to start from the ground up. I began with the vest. I didn’t want to go hot pink with Gambit but I did want to have a major highlight color. So I went with a dark red/wine and wore the vest. Then I added my Gangsta Pranksta pants with the red pinstripe that’s a close match in color. From there I added the coat, because Remy LeBeau needs a long coat, but I went with black instead of brown. I went with black for most of the other pieces, and added a flour de lis tie tie bar I made, because it’s one of the symbols of New Orleans.
Finally, I added my cane in place of his quarter staff and, of course, some playing cards.
I hope you enjoy my take on one of my favorite X-Men characters.
